Maternal & postpartumMaterno y posparto

Postpartum care in this country largely ends at the six-week visit. We build gatherings where mothers are cared for, not just checked on, close to where they already live and with their babies right next to them.

An afternoon for mothers in the postpartum year — rest, real conversation, and time with practitioners working in perinatal mental health, pelvic floor recovery, and family support. Babies stayed with their mothers the whole time.

Sixty-four mothers registered, from 24 ZIP codes across Los Angeles County — Huntington Park, Bellflower, Boyle Heights, Pico Rivera, South LA, Pomona, Downey, Whittier, Pacoima, Long Beach, Norwalk and more. Expecting mothers, mothers in the first year, mothers of older children, partners and support people all came. About 40 mothers and 55 people were on site across the afternoon. Of the 14 who filled out feedback cards, 13 said it was their first time at an event like this, and 13 said they would be more likely to join an activity if their baby could stay with them.

No. 2 is in planning. Mothers asked for movement, pelvic floor support, and an event closer to home, and that is what we are building next. Join the list and you will hear about it first.

Salud Wellness convenes this programming; licensed partner providers deliver perinatal and postpartum services directly at our events. We do not provide ongoing perinatal or postpartum clinical care, and we are not able to accept referrals into continuing care. We connect families to providers who can.

On mental healthSobre la salud mental

Licensed perinatal mental health clinicians join our gatherings to offer education and answer questions directly. Salud Wellness does not provide mental health treatment, counseling, or assessment. What we do is make sure no mother leaves without knowing where to go — and that the referral is one she can use, in her language, near where she lives.

Why this workPor qué este trabajo

More mothers die from this than from hemorrhage. In the most recent CDC maternal mortality review data, covering 2021 across 46 states, mental health conditions — including suicide and overdose related to substance use disorder — were a leading underlying cause of pregnancy-related death, behind about 22 percent of them. Eighty-seven percent of all pregnancy-related deaths were determined to be preventable.

And the risk does not end at discharge. About 30 percent of preventable pregnancy-related deaths occur between six weeks and one year postpartum — the window in which most clinical follow-up has already stopped, and when maternal suicide most commonly occurs. Roughly one in five women experiences a mental health condition during pregnancy or the postpartum period, and perinatal depression remains one of the most underdiagnosed complications of childbirth. In Los Angeles County, maternal depression is estimated to affect at least one in six new mothers.

The gap is not a shortage of programs. It is that the highest-risk months are the months when almost nobody is checking. That is the window we build for.

Who we work withCon quién trabajamos

Licensed clinicians in perinatal mental health, pelvic floor practitioners, lactation support, doulas and birth workers, county maternal health programs, and community organizations already trusted by the families we serve. We complement what exists rather than duplicating it.

Mothers left connected to people, not just pamphlets.

County and community partners staffed tables all afternoon, so a mother who wanted help could talk to someone about it the same day.

“The event was thoughtfully organized, engaging, and a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community. We truly appreciated being part of it.”

Mothers want to move. The baby has to come with them.Las madres quieren moverse. El bebé tiene que ir con ellas.

Fourteen mothers filled out feedback cards at Mothering the Mother. Thirteen said they would be more likely to join a physical activity if their baby could stay right next to them. Six had skipped a gym or a class because they couldn’t bring their baby, and five are paying for a membership they don’t use. Movement and pelvic floor support tied as the top request for the next event.

The cards also showed why this matters beyond fitness. Nine of the fourteen had needed emotional or mental health support since giving birth, and five of them weren’t able to get it. One mother told us afterward that her postpartum depression would have been less hard if she’d had an event like this earlier in motherhood.

And six said they aren’t currently connected to WIC, Medi-Cal, therapy, home visiting, or MAMA’s Neighborhood. Thirteen of the fourteen had never been to an event like this at all. These are not families already inside the system. That is the reach a weekend event with babies in the room makes possible.

Postpartum exercise lowered the odds of postpartum depression by 45 percent compared with no exercise, with a meaningful drop in symptoms at about 80 minutes of moderate activity a week. Research on mother-focused programs points to convenient locations and room for babies as what keeps mothers coming back. Sources are listed in our event summary.

We do pay particular attention to the mothers who get left out of everything else — mothers working hourly and shift jobs, mothers without childcare, mothers without a car, mothers who are not spoken to in their language at the front desk, mothers on probation or parole, and mothers reunifying with their children. Those barriers are the reason this is held on a weekend, with kids in the room, in a place people can get to.

Bring your kids. That is the design, not a concession.Traiga a sus hijos. Ese es el diseño, no una concesión.

Movement helps postpartum mood, and mothers rarely get to act on it. Exhaustion, unpredictable schedules, and no childcare get in the way, again and again. So we do it in person, in a room where children are welcome, outside of business hours. Every one of those choices answers a barrier the research already named.

The research behind itLa investigación detrás

Movement helps postpartum mood. That much is well established. What the research also shows is that mothers rarely get to act on it — and the reasons are consistent across studies: exhaustion, unpredictable schedules, caregiving and household responsibilities, and the absence of childcare. The strongest facilitators are equally consistent: social support, and having somewhere to put the kids.

In interviews, mothers in a postpartum group exercise program described their own baby as the single biggest obstacle to being active — until the baby was brought into the activity. Researchers found that the guilt attached to taking time for oneself eased when the child was part of the practice rather than left behind for it.

And convenience alone does not solve it. A randomized trial gave postpartum women at high risk of depression a library of short workout videos designed for them, including movement to do with their infants. It found no effect — because barely half of them ever logged in. The idea was sound. Delivering it through a screen was not.
